UNDER GRADUATE PROGRAMME


Mission

The mission of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is to train undergraduate students to advance current knowledge in the field, to encourage the discovery of improved therapies and to serve the public by providing quality surgical care.


Overview

The didactic curriculum in oral and maxillofacial surgery focuses on surgical application of the basic biomedical sciences. The lecture series in oral and maxillofacial surgery occurs as part of the dental Specialties course. The students are expected to keep detailed record in a logbook of cases treated or assisted, under local and observed under general anaesthesia. An introduction to the basic principles of the discipline including techniques of administration of local anesthesia, basic exodontias armamentarium and technique, fundamental surgical principles including asepsis, wound healing and hemostasis, complex exodontias, management of dentoalveolar infections, management of soft tissue and dentoalveolar injuries, prevention and management of surgical complications are all addressed in a multidisciplinary case-based format.      

 

POST GRADUATE PROGRAMME

 

The objective of the department is to enable the post graduate students to acquire the widest theoretical knowledge to be competent in the foundation for the practice of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery and acquire the experience to carry out research projects, to critically evaluate scientific publications and to communicate clinical and research papers in journals and conferences.

 

The Basic Medical Sciences will be integrated in the teaching programme. The students are expected to keep detailed record in a logbook of cases treated or assisted, under local or general anesthesia. During the clinical years in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery postings, students are rotated for outpatient clinics; operations under local anesthesia and general anesthesia; emergency calls and the routines of admitting and preparing patients for surgical procedures.

 

The students are rotated to the clinical departments/units of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, General Surgery, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and Anesthesiology and Intensive Care Unit for supervised training and exposure. Students also have the opportunity of oncology posting in cancer research institutes like Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute and Research Centre, Delhi and Fortis Hospital, Noida. Post graduate students will have a training programme in Yenepoya Institute of Craniofacial anomalies, Mangalore.


The clinical course focuses on more advanced surgical topics including dental extractions, impactions, preprosthetic surgery, implants, bone grafts and reconstructive surgery, management of benign and malignant lesions of the jaws, temporomandibular joint surgery, orthognathic surgery and correction of dentofacial anomalies, mandibular and midface trauma management.
