Traumatic dental injuries occur with great frequency in preschool, school age children and young adults comprising 5% of all injuries for which people seek treatment. Dental trauma often results in a treatment sequence which involves general dentists and many specialists. The primary care is frequently provided by a pediatric dentist, who subsequently with assistance of other specialists provides complete rehabilitation. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) has developed guidelines to define, describe appearances and set forth objectives for general management of acute traumatic dental injuries. These guidelines if followed could result in improved outcomes especially if immediate treatment has been provided. In the Department of Pediatric dentistry, students are trained to recognize, differentiate and appropriately manage or refer children with acute traumatic injuries, as dictated by the complexity of injury. A systematic approach to determine the extent of injury to teeth, periodontium and associated structures is essential and therefore a thorough medical and dental history with clinical and radiographic examination is provided. Advanced behavior guidance techniques are also taught to ensure proper care is given. The aim for the future is to raise the standard of care of dental trauma in children provided by students of I.T.S Dental College.
